Huge flaring at Bukom

Large bursts of orange flames accompanied by huge clouds of soot like this one have been sighted occurring periodically at Bukom on sat 27 Feb 10 and again on sun 28 Feb 10.

Shell has a recent media release regarding their ethylene cracker complex (ECC) and

Simon Lam, Venture Director of SEPC, explains: “Flares at refineries and chemical plants are a normal and vital part of keeping facilities running safely during start-up, unplanned operational interruptions or scheduled maintenance activities. Members of the public need not be concerned as carbon dioxide, water, and occasionally some soot are almost the only substances produced. They are not hazardous.

However, after over a decade of ongoing Singaporean complaints regarding the haze from Indonesian forest fires, seeing something like this on Singapore soil is more than disturbing.

That's not 'some' soot. That's a lot of soot. I have also seen soot blowing (and lots of soot too) at senoko smoke stacks under moonlight. Yes it is done at night; steam arising with soot. Ask Sembawang people living in flats nearby about the soot that constantly collect at their flats. 'Some' soot? Ha ha : )

Hahaha, some soot = harmless?!!?! Exactly what you said Joseph. A whole load of soot, so the haze across the past months is not at all suprising
