Kusu Island - Sandy lagoon with a section of coral.

It's quite amazing that such a well visited island still has a surprising amount of shore life.

A good number of coral and coral-like organisms :

Some corallimorphs :

Some zoanthids :

Unknown lumps :

Crabs :

Hairy crab.

Fiddler in awe at a looming lump of ass.

Red egg crab tha Liana found.

A small and cute crab. Most baby crabs are a drab brown grey color which is why this orange one caught my eye.

A very shy spotted hermit crab (Dardanus sp).

The fish :

An flatfish I happened to step on because it was totally covered in sand. It was really large (25-30cm long) and surprised me when it moved off. I really hope I didn't damage it.

Gobies typically abound, darting around in the shallow pools.

A tiny kite butterfly fish. We had to get down on elbows and knees to get a good angle.

Mudskipper.

The sea cucumber :

The only sea cucumber I saw today, a Garlic bread sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) that Ria found.

The carpet anemones :

Mouthparts, haddoni and gigantea.

Frilly anemones are very common especially in the rocky areas :

Frilly anemone (Phymanthus sp) seemingly growing on coral.

Really large Phymanthus that Liana found. I think it was about 12-15cm across.

Dark green Phymanthus.

Great photos as always! Love the hermit crab shot!

And that's a great flatfish find, although rather unfortunate for the poor fish :-)

Thanks Ria, the colors of the hermit crab is so nice, pity it's so shy. Poor fish indeed, lets hope it recovers from the ordeals. Not sure which is worse, getting stepped on or the paparazzi treatment after.

Thanks Liana! Did you get some good shots of it too?
